Dear Qadeer,

If you want to request asylum in Spain, the first step is to get an appointment to express your intention to apply for asylum, you will find the contact details for the appointment here, depending on your province of residence. In the province of Barcelona, you must call +34 932 903 098 to get an initial appointment. Because the asylum system is overbooked, it is difficult to get an appointment, unfortunately the only solution is to keep calling as often as possible until someone picks up. We also recommend caution, because there are many scammers trying to get people to pay money and then giving out fake appointments. The appointment will always be free.

Once you go to that first appointment, you will receive a document proving that you have expressed your intention to apply for asylum, and allows you to stay in Spain legally while you wait to request asylum. You will also be given a date for your second appointment, which is a confidential interview where you will formalize your application by disclosing the reasons why you are seeking asylum. It is recommended to bring as much proof as possible.

After that second appointment you will receive a document commonly known as "hoja blanca" certifying that you have applied for asylum. This document also certifies that you will be able to work legally if your asylum application has not yet been resolved after 6 months.

Pay attention to the expiration date of your “hoja blanca”, as the renewal appointment may also be difficult to obtain.

You will find all the relevant information and more details about the asylum application process in Spain on the UNHCR website.

If you would like more guidance and prefer to talk to someone in person, it is advisable to go to a local organization. Here are some organizations providing help to asylum seekers in Barcelona:

- Spanish Red Cross: Dónde estamos - Cruz Roja

- SAIER: Servei d'Atenció a Immigrants, Emigrants i Refugiats (SAIER) | New Citizenship | Barcelona City Council

- ACCEM: Accem - Organización - ¿Dónde estamos? Conoce todas nuestras oficinas

Best wishes.

Dear Qadeer,

The Portal Migrar offers online legal advice, but does not work on the ground and cannot directly help you with this issue. That is why I have attached the websites of different organisations who will be able to provide in-person free orientation and assistance during the asylum process.

- SAIER: Servei d'Atenció a Immigrants, Emigrants i Refugiats (SAIER) | New Citizenship | Barcelona City Council

Best wishes!
